Buy the QIDI Plus5 as a new machine when its 320 × 320 × 300 mm envelope prevents a recurring split, or when the revised load-cell leveling, three-layer filter, dual-band Wi-Fi, camera detection, or current QIDI Box path fixes a constraint you can name.

Do not replace a working Plus4 merely for “18% more build volume.” That percentage is correct across all three axes together, but the one-piece limit rises by only 15 mm in X, 15 mm in Y, and 20 mm in Z. QIDI also lists the same 370 C nozzle, 120 C bed, and 65 C chamber ceilings for both generations. If the real queue already fits 305 × 305 × 280 mm, the headline heat capability does not create an upgrade case.

What the 18% volume claim means

The current Plus5 specification lists 320 × 320 × 300 mm. The current Plus4 technical specification lists 305 × 305 × 280 mm. Multiplying those envelopes gives 30.72 litres for Plus5 and 26.047 litres for Plus4, a 17.94% increase. QIDI’s rounded 18% claim is supported by its own dimensions and is also the comparison used in its 5 August 2026 launch record .

Volume is not the same as maximum part length. The useful thresholds are:

  • 306-320 mm in X: Plus5 may keep the part in one piece;
  • 306-320 mm in Y: the same 15 mm decision window applies;
  • 281-300 mm in Z: Plus5 adds a 20 mm vertical window;
  • over 320 × 320 × 300 mm: neither orientation tricks nor the volume percentage make it fit.

Brims, supports, purge structures, edge margin, and the sliced orientation still consume room. QIDI also notes that a 9 × 13 mm lower-left area is non-printable by default because of the cutter; the manufacturer says removing the cutter enables full-plate printing. Check the actual sliced plate rather than treating every nominal millimetre as automatically usable.

More build volume, almost the same bench rectangle

The Plus5 body is listed at 500 × 488 × 558 mm; Plus4 is 505 × 487 × 550 mm. On that simple width-by-depth rectangle, Plus5 occupies about 0.244 m², around 0.8% less than Plus4’s 0.245935 m². It extracts roughly 18.9% more nominal build volume per square metre of listed machine footprint.

That is a packaging achievement, not a complete installation plan. QIDI tells buyers to leave extra room behind, beside, and above Plus5 for filament changes, ventilation, cooling, and service, but it does not publish exact clearance numbers on the retained page. We therefore do not invent an operating depth.

One independent Tom’s Hardware Plus5 review found the rear filament path awkward to reach on its review setup. That is one reviewer’s physical observation, not a universal usability score, but it makes the missing service-zone number consequential. A body that fits flush against a wall may still be a poor working installation.

Plus5 is also listed at 29 kg, 2 kg or about 7.4% heavier than Plus4. Include the work surface, carrying route, filament, optional QIDI Box, and Polar Cooler before treating it as a machine you will move casually.

The stronger Plus5 case is therefore capacity density plus revised controls, not a broader headline temperature envelope. That distinction matters for existing owners: a change in sensor, filter, network, or accessory topology may be useful, but none proves better dimensional accuracy, reliability, air cleaning, or print quality without evidence beyond a specification sheet.

Engineering materials: the temperature ceiling did not move

Both QIDI pages list PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA, PA, PC, and fibre-reinforced polymers, alongside the same maximum nozzle, bed, and chamber temperatures. Plus5’s page additionally names PPS-CF in its material FAQ. A named material is not a guarantee that every grade, part, nozzle, build surface, or profile will work.

Start with the exact filament manufacturer’s data sheet. Confirm nozzle construction and diameter, feed-gear abrasion resistance, drying, bed surface, chamber guidance, ventilation, waste handling, and the finished part’s validation method. A desktop printer specification does not certify a structural, electrical, pressure, medical, automotive, food-contact, or other safety-critical part.

The Plus5 page also publishes 190 W for PLA and 500 W for ABS as steady-state examples at 25 C ambient, plus three rated-power component figures. Plus4 publishes a different two-part rated-power format. Those fields are not like-for-like energy measurements, so this analysis does not manufacture a running-cost comparison from them.

QIDI Box and accessory boundary

Plus5 is listed as compatible with QIDI Box and up to 16 colours when as many as four boxes are chained. The standalone printer is not the full system, and the exact box generation matters:

  • a MAX4 QIDI Box can connect directly;
  • a PLUS4 or Q2 QIDI Box needs the Plus5/MAX4 hub and signal cable;
  • multiple boxes also need the relevant expansion kit;
  • the optional Polar Cooler is another separate component with its own placement and operating boundary.

The independent Tom’s review did not receive a QIDI Box with its Plus5 review unit, so it could not validate the Plus5 combination. That is a useful limit: do not convert “compatible” into a tested multicolour verdict, and do not assume a box already owned for another QIDI generation transfers without hardware.

Before ordering, confirm:

  1. exact Plus5 identity rather than Plus4, Q2, MAX4, or a similarly named bundle;
  2. standalone, Combo, and Polar Cooler contents;
  3. seller, voltage label, region, warranty route, returns, and current support;
  4. whether the real sliced queue crosses one of the 15-20 mm upgrade windows;
  5. rear, side, and top access on the actual bench;
  6. QIDI Box generation and required hub, cable, or expansion kit;
  7. the exact filament and part-validation requirements.

Final verdict

The QIDI Plus5 is the more rational new buy when its extra 15 mm in X and Y or 20 mm in Z changes a recurring part, or when the revised control, filter, network, or QIDI Box architecture solves a measured workflow problem. It adds about 18% nominal volume without increasing the listed bench rectangle.

Plus4 owners should keep their machine when the queue already fits and temperature capability is the proposed reason to upgrade. The retained specifications list the same 370 C nozzle, 120 C bed, and 65 C chamber ceilings. Capacity density changed; the headline heat limits did not.
