The PolyDryer makes most sense when you rotate several single spools and want each one to stay in its own sealed container. Its useful distinction is a reusable heated dock beneath a removable storage box. Buy the dock-and-box package first. Buying a cheaper box-only listing gives you storage, not a complete powered dryer.

Polymaker’s product listing separates these options explicitly. Capacity is the manufacturer’s spool-weight classification, not a promise that every unusually wide spool will fit. Compare an odd-shaped spool with the manual’s geometry before ordering.

The XL is especially easy to misread. Its official documentation identifies a larger box and an adapter for connecting it to the dock. It is not a second, independently powered multi-spool dryer. A standard system is the simpler choice if all your reels are ordinary 1 kg sizes.

One dock with several boxes: useful storage, serial drying

Consider four materials that you use intermittently. One dock and four compatible boxes lets you dry a spool, remove its container and move the next box onto the dock. That avoids transferring the first spool into another storage container. It does not give you four heated drying positions at once.

That distinction decides whether this modular system is worth buying. If most reels wait days between projects, separate containers may be more valuable than additional heater capacity. Feeding filament does not create an AMS

The PolyDryer manual describes the box, dock and drying controls. Its three power levels are not equivalent to typing any desired material temperature into a universal oven controller. Follow the documented profile for your filament and respect the spool’s heat limit.

A box positioned beside a printer can support a feed path, but it does not automatically become an enclosed automatic material system. Consider the filament’s route, friction and room for the lid and dock. Do not buy it expecting it to replace a Bambu AMS or add automatic color switching.

Reasons to choose another dryer

  • You need several spools heated simultaneously, rather than stored separately.
  • Your filament requires a drying profile outside the documented system’s capability.
  • Your spool geometry requires the XL, but the extra box and adapter make the complete setup poor value.
  • You already own effective sealed storage and only need a simple single-spool drying appliance.
